An exciting afternoon concert of renaissance era lute songs, solos, and duets at St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church, 2220 Snowy Egret Lane, Los Osos, on Sunday, Oct.8th, at 4pm. The event will feature soprano Katherine Arthur, and lute players James Bishop-Edwards and Samuel Shalhoub. Arthur and Edwards will perform songs by Thomas Campion. Edwards and Shalhoub will also perform lute solos and duets.
Arthur, who teaches voice at Cal Poly, has appeared as a soloist with the Southwest Chamber Music Ensemble, Santa Barbara Oratorio Society and Pacific Repertory Opera. As a guest artist in Europe, she recorded works for Austrian Radio and ORFEO Records. She is featured on “Child in Me,” a CD of songs recently released by Cal Poly Professor Ken Habib. Arthur also teaches singing classes through the San Luis Coastal Adult School.

James Bishop-Edwards has been a performer, teacher, composer and recording artist for over 35 years. He plays not only the rich and varied traditional repertoire, but also his own compositions and contemporary genres as well. James plays historical instruments of the Renaissance and Baroque periods such as the five-course guitar and eight-course lute. He was head of the Guitar Department at Southern Oregon University in Ashland for several years, and previously on the faculty as Guitar Instructor at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. James has over twenty recordings to his credit, which feature his arrangements of American and European classics. Six books of these arrangements have been published by Mel Bay Publications. A few of his many performance credits include: featured artist at the 1999 and 2005 La Guitarra California Festival, the Santa Barbara Arts Festival, Richard Schneiders’ Lost Mountain Guitar Festival, and soloist with the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and Jefferson Baroque Orchestra. http://www.jamesbishopedwards.com
Samuel Shalhoub graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz in June, 2016, with his Master of Art degree in Music. His emphasis was in classical guitar and renaissance lute performance practice, yet he cultivated many of his other talents as well, including conducting wind ensemble, composing for various experimental ensembles, and teaching theory and musicianship to undergraduates. Samuel actively teaches and performs throughout the Central Coast, from San Luis Obispo to Santa Cruz.
