SAINT BENEDICT’S DAY
July 11th is the feast day of our patron saint, Benedict of Nursia.
St. Benedict’s Church in Los Osos was established in July 1987 as a Bishop’s Congregation of the Diocese of El Camino Real. We were named for Benedict of Nursia, whose Rule of Saint Benedict, written to show how to live a balanced life, is still used today to inspire Christians’ spiritual journey. From the beginning, Benedictine Spirituality has been a vital part of congregational life here for many.

RECTOR’S SABBATICAL – Caro+ will be on sabbatical starting August 2nd and returning to take services on October 31st when we will celebrate All Saints Day. If you want to talk with her before she goes, please make an appointment very soon. In her absence, Sunday services will be led by Susan Plucker+ and the Rev. Brian Stein-Webber. If you have a pastoral concern, please contact Senior Warden Stef Shuman. Jay Matthew will be continuing in the office to answer questions and help with administrative details. The Parish Council will be responsible for the congregation in the Rector’s absence.
NAME TAGS – We haven’t seen some of you for quite a while, and new hairstyles and face masks make it hard to recognize each other. So we are asking everyone to wear a name tag. Please check the name tag board by the door for yours. If you can’t find it, please ask Stef for a replacement. (Or just tell the ushers). In the meantime, you can fill out an adhesive tag for the day.

LOVE IS THE WAY – Throughout July, our online spiritual conversation will be based on the ideas in Bishop Michael Curry’s book Love is the Way – Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times. This is an easy book to read so we will initially aim to cover three chapters each week but if that seems too fast we will slow down. St James Austin has a reading guide on their website which you may find useful. If you don’t have time or inclination to read the book the reading guide will help you to think about it. But as usual there is no requirement that you read the book. You are welcome just as you are. Tuesdays in July at 10:15 on Zoom following Prayers for the Morning at 9:45.
NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR HIRED – We are pleased to announce Dave Alm has been hired as St. Benedict’s new Music Director, starting July 25. Dave studied at UC Berkeley and then studied Music Composition at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is well-known locally as an excellent accompanist, and a fine choir director. Dave has previously played for the Saturday evening service when John was unavailable. Please make him welcome among us
DOCUMENTARY ON HOMELESSNESS SOLUTIONS: Wed, July 28 7pm
The Way Home is a series of short documentaries focusing on homelessness in California. We have the opportunity to view two episodes from the upcoming Season 2 (online). The two films we will be watching are:
— ‘Repercussions of Racism’ which explores the history of systemic racism on housing policy and homelessness, examining the impact of redlining in Pacoima, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, and solutions to end homelessness.
— ‘A Challenge, An Opportunity’ shows how the sense of urgency amid the COVID-19 pandemic spurred action, revealing that powerful policies and programs, such as Project Roomkey, can be implemented at an accelerated pace.
Following the two short films (running time about 25 minutes) there will be an opportunity for discussion. We don’t yet have the link for the videos so please watch the Benediction Weekly and your email. It will be necessary to sign up in advance.
VESPERS SERVICE CHANGE – Our Tuesday night Vespers service has returned to the church, but in order for people to still be able to participate from home we are experimenting with a hybrid format of both a zoom and in-person gathering. Jjoin us – one way or the other – any Tuesday at 5:30.
VIRTUAL COFFEE HOUR – for those watching at home, the Zoom room is available between 11:30-12:30 on Sundays for informal no-host conversations.
DAILY PAUSINGS – Join us for Pausings – a few minutes of reflection with Caro+ posted most every day at about 7pm on St. Benedict’s Facebook page. These few minutes of poetry, psalms, and prayers are a great way to end your day, or access anytime.
