ANNOUNCEMENTS

WELCOME OUR NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR – We are pleased to introduce Dave Alm, our new music director, starting July 25.   Dave studied at UC Berkeley and then studied Music Composition at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is well-known locally as an excellent accompanist, and a fine choir director. Glad to have you with us!

DOCUMENTARY ON HOMELESSNESS SOLUTIONS:  Wed, July 28 7pm

The Way Home is a series of short documentaries focusing on homelessness in California. We have the opportunity to view two episodes from the upcoming Season 2 (online). The two films we will be watching are:

— ‘Repercussions of Racism’ which explores the history of systemic racism on housing policy and homelessness, examining the impact of redlining in Pacoima, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, and solutions to end homelessness.

— ‘A Challenge, An Opportunity’ shows how the sense of urgency amid the COVID-19 pandemic spurred action, revealing that powerful policies and programs, such as Project Roomkey, can be implemented at an accelerated pace.

Following the two short films (running time about 25 minutes) there will be an opportunity for discussion.  Click here for the Zoom Link. The access code is: snowy

FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH 8AM SERVICE – On the first Sunday of each month our 8am service is the lay-led Liturgy of the Word only. This is the same format we’ve been using for some time with a lively discussion of the lessons for the day, and no Eucharist is celebrated.   Beginning August 1st, it will be available only on Zoom – there will be no in-person gathering at the church.  (On other Sundays at 8am there is a Eucharist at the church, and the service is also available on Zoom.)

SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY  –  Starting Sunday, August 1st….Sunday Morning Bible Study will resume between the two morning services.     Lisa Gonzalez and Lorienne Schwenk will be on board to serve as coordinators, but they really want to know what you want to study:  Old Testament? New Testament? Book of Common Prayer? Something else from Christian Writings?   Please let Lisa know (lgonzo@fix.net) your ideas, and if you would like to help with the coordination as well.  Everybody’s contribution is important and valuable!  Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday, August 1 starting at 9:20-9:30.    Blessings!  Lisa Gonzalez.

PEOPLE’S KITCHEN AUGUST 7 –   Our next turn hosting lunch for the clients at 40 Prado will be Saturday, August 7th.  If you can help provide food or help serve it, please contact Pat Henry as soon as possible. 661-340-2291 or riecie5381@gmail.com

COFFEE HOUR SIGN-UPS – Our after-service hospitality will continue in a limited fashion while Covid restrictions are still in force.  There will be a sign-up sheet posted in the kitchen for anyone who would like to host coffee hour on a specific Sunday (rather than have it be part of the ministry schedule assignments).  If you sign up, coffee will have been made in advance and you will just be asked to put out the coffee service and provide a light snack, such as cookies that people may pick up for themselves, and then you will clean things up and put them away.  If no one signs up there will not be coffee hour on that day.

VIRTUAL COFFEE HOUR – for those watching at home, the Zoom room is available between 11:30-12:30 on Sundays for informal no-host conversations. Supply your own coffee!

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES – We are looking for more people to serve on Sundays as ushers, tellers, lectors, altar guild, flower guild, and Eucharistic ministers.  If you have done this in the past and are now able to return to this ministry, please let Lorienne Schwenk know.  If you haven’t done it here at St. Ben’s before but would like to start, please contact Stef Shuman.

HOLLISTER INSTITUTION’S SPIRITUAL CONVERSATIONS – will be  completing our discussion of Bishop Curry’s “Love is the Way” on July 28th.     We will not be meeting in August, but will resume September 7th with a discussion sparked by The Dream of God:  A Call to Return  by Verna J. Dozier.  This selection will be led by Carol Brubaker Walton on Tuesdays at 10:15 throughout September and will take place only on Zoom.

Regarding the book:   This modern classic has touched lives and transformed hearts since its publication in 1991.  Again and again the Christian church as fallen away from the dream God has for it, a dream in which we are called to follow Jesus and not merely to worship him.  Through adept storytelling and Bible study, Dozier reawakens our sense of calling and our desire for truth.

ST BENEDICT’S OFFICE HOURS –

Tuesdays 3-6pm;   Thursdays 10am-1pm;   Saturdays 10am-1pm

NAME TAGS –  We haven’t seen some of you for quite a while, and new hairstyles and face masks make it hard to recognize each other.   So we are asking everyone to wear a name tag. Please check the name tag board by the door for yours.  If you can’t find it, please ask Stef for a replacement. (Or just tell the ushers).  In the meantime, you can fill out an adhesive tag for the day.

DONATIONS  – Collection plates are not passed during the service, but you may put your contributions in the plate by the usher’s station before the service, or contribute on-line at: https://www.StBensLosOsos.org/support-us/  or by mail to our PO Box.   Thank you for your offerings!  We are grateful for God’s financial providence and blessing.

VESPERS SERVICE CHANGE – Our Tuesday night Vespers service has returned to the church, but in order for people to still be able to participate from home we are using a hybrid format of both a zoom and in-person gathering.   Join us – one way or the other – any Tuesday at 5:30.

BIDDING BOOK PRAYERS – If you’d like to request prayers for someone to have their names read out during the worship services on Sunday, please submit their names to stefshuman@sbcglobal.net during the week.

PERSONAL PRAYER – A member of the Healing Prayer Ministry team is available each week after the 10:30 service to pray with you for special concerns. If you’d like this prayer support this week, contact Jill Denton at (805) 704-1364. If no answer, please leave a message and your call will be returned.

PRAYER CHAIN – Also, remember that you may send your prayer requests to the prayer chain at: prayers@stbenslososos.org  This is a group of individuals dedicated to intercessory prayers, who upon receiving your email will pray for your concerns.  If you’d like to be part of the chain and receive prayer requests by email, contact Stef.

BENEDICT’S CONNECTIONS – Please do not hesitate to reach out to each other to stay in contact, and feel free to call Stef at 805-534-3622 or stefshuman@sbcglobal.net
